Classroom Assessment Integration Program

Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5414 (RCW 28A.300.041) calls for the Superintendent to redesign Washington’s assessment system. To support this effort, OSPI’s Division of Assessment and Student Information recently established the Classroom Assessment Integration program. This program will work to integrate summative, formative and classroom-based assessments.

On February 1, 2010, OSPI hosted a stakeholder Formative Assessment Symposium. The symposium included a panel of national experts who provided their analyses of the formative assessment vision laid out in ESSB 5414.

At the request of OSPI, Dr. Joseph Ryan wrote the paper, Envisioning a State Educational System: Improving Learning Through A Comprehensive Assessment System (PDF, 31 pages) to elaborate on the legislative mandates described in Senate Bill 5414 and to serve as one of the resource documents for the Formative Assessment Symposium.

The expert panelists included Dr. Joseph Ryan (ASU), Dr. Barbara Plake (UN), Dr. Michael Trevisan (WSU), and Dr. Jim Popham (UCLA). Participants began the work of establishing priorities for which types of "instructionally supportive assessments" should be addressed first.
