Dual Language Immersion

Lead with Languages
This is the year to Lead with Languages! The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) encourages all interested parties to view this video and advocate for languages.

A Dual Language Immersion program is a Two-Way language-learning model that provides content-based instruction to students in two languages: English and a language other than English, such as Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, or other world language. The goal is that students in a K–12 or grades 1–12 uninterrupted sequence of study will be, by graduation:

  • Proficient (fluent) in the new language (Advanced Proficiency on the ACTFL Proficiency Scale)
  • Acquire an understanding and appreciation of other cultures
  • Meet or exceed subject content standards and expectations

Other terminology for immersion program models include: Total Immersion, Two-Way Immersion, and Partial Immersion. Typically, these content-driven programs begin at kindergarten or first grade and continue through elementary school and, ideally, into middle and high school. The amount of proficiency acquired in an immersion program is highly correlated to the time and intensity of the program.

A number of immersion programs currently exist in a variety of districts in Washington, including, but not limited to, Bellevue, Evergreen, Highline, Kennewick, Mount Vernon, Northshore, Pasco, Seattle, Shelton, Tacoma, Vancouver, Wenatchee, and Yakima—offering instruction in Spanish, Japanese, and/or Mandarin Chinese. To see where programs are, check the Dual Language Map in Washington State.
