Transforming Professional Learning

Transforming Professional Learning (WA-TPL) engages a network of partners working on sustainable approaches to professional learning. With grant support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (B&MGF), OSPI has teamed up with Learning Forward Washington, the Association of Educational Service Districts, and other partners to facilitate the project. The grant period runs through October 2016.

The WA-TPL project focuses on enhancing capacity for standards-based professional learning. School district teams are combining efforts to build and support comprehensive professional learning systems.  Lab districts agree to more transparency in their work, critical friends benefit by offering feedback and support to lab teams.

Despite everything we know about effective professional learning, and despite a growing consensus about the importance of professional learning as a school improvement strategy, education stakeholders remain challenged to implement and sustain effective professional learning.

In WA-TPL state, regional, school district, and building leaders are working to deepen their knowledge and skills around effective professional learning. This will lead to stronger foundations for sustained, standards-based results across the state.

WA-TPL is a roadmap for careful visioning, planning, and implementation of district-wide efforts to systematically identify and replicate the most successful teaching practices across a school district.

Update! During the WA-TPL Project Extension, 11/1/16 through 6/30/17, the work continues with 12 districts using unexpended funds from the original budget. Goals and activities relate to enhancing local and regional capacity, strengthening practices, procedures, and/or policies that sustain the work, and synthesizing lessons learned.
